The Lupin Garden

‘The Lupin Garden’- by Patricia Wilson-Smith
Margate Harbour Arm Gallery, Margate CT9 1AP, 9 – 30th October 2010

Nearly everybody has at least one thing – an object, photograph, picture, piece of writing, poetry or music, something that is a reminder of a personal and significant event in their life. It may be the ‘touchstone’ to something wonderful, uplifting, and life-changing, but equally well, it might be a reminder of something bad, sad, or tragic.

For me the Lupin Garden is part auto-biography, part imagination. It is a place that exists in my earliest memories as a calm haven I visited before I was able to talk, in the very early years when childhood experience is largely internalised. Once I learned language, the world of books and literature offered another ‘garden’ into which I could escape.

For ‘The Lupin Garden’ I have used small objects of significance to pin down scattered and fragmented scenes from my past. Literature and film have been important all my life, and there is bound to be a blurring of edges, maybe some difficulty in finding where the ‘truth’ lies. This is the nature of memory.
